Özet

Turkish cannot stack a tense suffix on an aspect suffix or a nominal predicate, resorting to a periphrasis pattern where an auxiliary element i appears. The authors argue that i in Turkish, being a strictly suffix-like (post) morpheme, cannot be analyzed as a Complex Left Branch constructed as a last resort, along the lines of what Starke (2021) proposed for the English auxiliary be. Furthermore, unlike English be which appears whenever the progressive -ing is used, the Turkish auxiliary i does not appear when only an aspect suffix is overtly present, exhibiting the pattern dubbed overflow in Bjorkman (2011). To explain this overflow distribution, the authors explore two different hypotheses: one which is conservative on the fseq yet demonstrably fails and one which introduces a primitive feature that we argue is part of the fseq whenever the eventuality is anchored to times or worlds distinct from the context world or time.
