Özet

Data on steering grip-force characteristics of the drivers may contribute to vehicle design in terms of quality, comfort and driving performance. This study obtained such data from a sample of drivers (n=13; 8 males and 5 females) in on-road tests while the drivers were driving an automobile on two different road conditions (smooth asphalt/rough asphalt), and at two different speeds (70 km/h/105 km/h). A custom-made capacitive pressure mapping system, wrapped around the steering-wheel, was used as the steering grip-force measuring device. The results indicated that, the male drivers, on the average, exerted significantly higher magnitude of steering grip-force while driving in comparison to female drivers. On the other hand, there was no statistical significance between the genders in terms of relative steering grip-force. The drivers, on the average, applied 21% of their maximal net steering grip-force, intermittently. The effects of the speed and the road condition on the steering grip-force response were statistically weak.
