Özet
This chapter discusses the theoretical perspectives on the syntax of negation. Theoretical studies on sign languages generally rely on the position of negation in the overall clause structure of sign languages, and the role and distribution of non-manual markers. The chapter introduces a syntactic universal and evaluates the findings on the position of negation in the literature with respect to this universal. According to Biberauer et al., when two neighboring heads in the same syntactic spine are considered, two of the possible orders are syntactically harmonic while the other two are disharmonic. The chapter focuses on the position of manual markers of negation in various sign languages. The precaution to treat the same-looking non-manual markers of negation carefully for their own sake is valid only for backwards head-tilt but also for side-to-side headshake, a very common non-manual marker accompanying negation across sign languages.
