Özet

Sociolinguistic research in Turkey has been an established area of academic interest for the past 25 years. Much of the earlier work focused on a limited range of sociolinguistic analysis. Despite being irregular, recent growth in the discipline and a rising body of work by a new generation of academics based in Turkey and abroad suggest that Turkish sociolinguistic research is now at a new phase in terms of new research areas. To understand this change in research focus, we center in this chapter on three geographical regions where Turkish or a variety of Turkish is spoken as a first language: mainland Turkey, Northern Cyprus and Turkic republics in central Asia. We also take into account situations outside of Turkey where Turkish is spoken as an immigrant and/or heritage language. We start with an outline of the sociolinguistic makeup of these regions and then present a comprehensive summary of the most recent sociolinguistic research conducted in our area of focus.
