Özet
As the student body becomes more diverse around the world, teachers may not be ready to teach in these diverse classrooms. Community-based service-learning (CBSL) projects in teacher education seems an effective solution to prepare pre-service teachers (PSTs) for these diverse populations, which is examined in this chapter. The CBSL project was part of a semester-long course, examined also in a larger study. This chapter analyzes three PSTs' stories using the framework by Lucas and Villegas, emphasizing knowledge, skills, and dispositions for linguistically responsive teachers (LRT). The findings showed that close interaction with the community members have benefits for PSTs. They recognized and enhanced their knowledge and dispositions towards ELLs. Moreover, they gained specific strategies to be used in the future. This chapter aims to add to the literature on teacher education by promoting more thorough planning for CBSL projects to prepare mainstream/content area teachers for culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
